Description
Planting the Climbing Hydrangea Petiolaris is the perfect way to soften and decorate a trellis, tree trunk, or stark brick or stone garden wall. In May and June the vine produces abundant, large, 7 to 8-inch diameter lacecap clusters of wonderfully fragrant white flowers at the ends of branches that can extend up to 3 feet from the tree trunk or other supporting structure. The dried flower clusters and reddish brown peeling bark are attractive in winter. No attachments are necessary for this vine to climb as it naturally clings to bark, wood, brick and other surfaces using its own aerial roots, which won’t harm your walls or trees.
When not in flower the pretty, the heart-shaped leaves of Hydrangea Petiolaris make this climbing vine an highly attractive covering for a large tree trunk, wall or fence. In our gardens, we have one that has climbed over 30 feet high up the trunk of a large 70 year old pecan tree. Here in Georgia USDA Zone 8a and further south this one prefers some afternoon shade or filtered sun but will grow in full sun or part shade in USDA Zones 4 through 7.Â
Landscape & Garden Uses
Climbing up to 40 feet or more in height, the Climbing Hydrangea Petiolaris provides wonderful texture and color as a vertical accent on home foundation or other walls, trellises, arbors, pergolas, and tree trunks. A fine addition to Hydrangea gardens, white gardens, fragrance gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â Â 4 feet apart to cover walls or fences. One plant is usually sufficient to cover a tree trunk
Growing Preferences
Climbing Hydrangea is easy to grow. It’s not aggressive and the delicate aerial rootlets by which it clings won’t harm your walls or your trees. Climbing Hydrangea is also one of a few ornamental vines that will flower even in shade. grows in full sun to part shade in USDA Zones 4a to 7b but will appreciate filtered sun or shade in the afternoon in Zones 8a-9b. Grows well in moist but well-drained soils of average fertility.

I wanted a vine for shade, looked on line, and found hydrangea vine. No nursery had it in stock and some had never heard of hydrangea as a vine. So back to the internet and I found Wilson Bros, and ordered said vine in a two gallon pot. Ten days later this huge box arrived with a perfectly packaged, well leafed out, 4 foot vine. The best plant I have ever ordered by mail. I am so impressed. It arrived well staked and I put it on a trellis. I will remove the stake soon. I have shown it off to friends and neighbors, who all say what, a hydrangea vine, never heard of such a plant. Thank you Wilson Bros.———————-On eof my favorite vines! Thanks to everyone at Wilson Brothers! I have been looking everywhere for a climbing hydrangea. I’ve always been reluctant to order plants online. Usually, the products are not very good and the care with which they’re grown and packaged leaves a lot to be desired. I went to a local garden center about 2 weeks ago and asked about the hydrangea and the attendant called someone on the radio but before he could get an answer someone in the store yelled out, “there’s no such thing as a climbing hydrangea!” I knew that wasn’t true but rather than disagree, I decided I probably didn’t want to purchase anything from them anyway. Just by chance I came across your web page and spent some time reading about how the Wilson Brothers started and expanded the business over the years. I was very impressed to say the least but also proud of how Americans can develop something like this from nothing but desire, hard work and vision! It does my heart good to know that the fulfillment of these dreams can still be achieved in America.
Anyway, when I received my box this morning I thought that the plant was going to be damaged because the box was crushed right in the area where it said “live plant.” But when I opened it I couldn’t have been more surprised to find a beautiful plant that looked as though it had just been taken from the greenhouse. Because care had been taken during the packaging, there was no damage at all. In fact, my hydrangea looks better than most plants purchased right here in Loveland. All of the leaves were bright and strong. It’s obvious that you guys really care for your plants with lots of love throughout the growing process.
I just wanted to tell you that given the quality and expense, it really makes no sense to hunt around the various local garden centers. These places tend to be way over-priced and for the most part are staffed by younger less-experienced seasonal help that really don’t care what you think or whether you buy anything or not.
My new hydrangea is happily buried in the spot I had picked and it really is amazingly beautiful. It really exceeded my expectations! I will tell everyone where it came from and not to be fearful about buying mail order plants. My sincerest thanks!———————————-Thanks for the great review! We are so glad you are pleased! Beth | WBG
